I create dynamic abstract paintings on dimensional shaped panels, often showcased in local Knoxville galleries and featured in the Knoxville art scene. Each piece I create results from an inquiry that addresses various aspects of art, math, science, and craft. Equally inspired by the beauty found in nature and the elegance of science and innovation, these inquiries have led me to explore the mathematical structure of flowers, investigate the planets and stars, and examine our relationship with them through science and mythology. Additionally, I delve into the effect of geometric patterns on our visual perception and the role memory plays in that process. This approach to my work has resulted in personal innovations in woodworking and prismatic photography, even contributing a new formula to the field of mathematics. Ultimately, through my art, I seek to deepen my understanding of the world and my place within it, encouraging viewers to do the same for themselves—whether they discover my work in a Broadway art store or a local Knoxville studio.

Mandy Lynn Carris is a photographer, found object arranger, part-time painter, and plant art creator based in Knoxville. Her work can often be found in various Knoxville galleries and the local broadway art store, showcasing the vibrant Knoxville art scene.

I have been working with wood since 1972, when I studied architectural restoration in Dayton, Ohio, with a master woodworker from Italy. My experience spans millwork, furniture, and cabinetmaking before I partnered with Akira Blount, my late wife, in 1991. Now, I create wood-turned 'skirts' and contribute to the vibrant Knoxville art scene, often showcasing my work at local venues and the broadway galleries. I also supply unique pieces to a popular broadway art store in Knoxville, enhancing the creative offerings of the Knoxville studio.

I graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1976 with a BFA, where I was influenced by several professors associated with the Knoxville 7, which has shaped some of my work. I focus on color and strive to incorporate it across all mediums, including oil, alcohol ink, and clay. My artwork often finds inspiration in the vibrant Knoxville art scene, and I enjoy showcasing my pieces in various Broadway galleries and my Knoxville studio, as well as exploring offerings at the Broadway art store.
Edmund Mathews is an international artist who has exhibited his work throughout China and the United States, including notable shows in Knoxville galleries. During his eight years living, teaching, and creating art in China, he delivered lectures and gallery talks at various universities and art spaces, such as Youpin Art Gallery, Bubble Lab, and the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in Xi’an City. Edmund’s work delves into themes of immigration, migration, nostalgia, land, power, identity, and home. His current body of work centers on cross-cultural experiences as a transitory immigrant, addressing personal narratives and cross-cultural encounters encountered while living in China. As a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he earned his MFA in Drawing and Painting with Honors, and he continues to inspire at local venues like the Broadway art store and Knoxville studio.

With a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Tennessee, I enjoyed a full career as a clinical therapist and, later, school psychologist in southern Indiana. Upon retirement, I returned to Knoxville to be near my mother. On a whim, I signed up for a drawing class at U.T. when the native plant class I wanted to audit was full. I was immediately hooked. This decision marked the beginning of a second adventure: systematically studying two-dimensional art and becoming an artist in the vibrant Knoxville art scene.
My work is driven by a sense of motion, with hurried, varied mark-making often accompanying the arrangement of found objects. I draw, paint, arrange, and print to “hold a moment” in time so I can review it and better understand or appreciate it. This process reminds me of the version of play therapy I used as a psychologist, where a child would choose miniatures from an array, arrange them until it felt “just right,” and then examine the resulting scene with the therapist for meaning.
I enjoy the play of arranging as the creation of a visual language, which I may not fully understand as I am making it. My work often draws inspiration from local influences, including visits to the Broadway art store and the numerous Broadway galleries that showcase the rich artistic culture of Knoxville.

Christine Barron is a 2D artist who earned her MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After a decade of creating digital artwork, she has returned to traditional media at Broadway Studios and Gallery, a well-known Broadway art store. Utilizing acrylic and water on raw canvas in large formats, her work reflects a deep engagement with her surroundings.
Her primary focus lies in crafting abstract landscapes that emphasize atmosphere and mood. Grounded in environmental design inspired by visited places, she aims to evoke both a sense of place and emotion. During her travels through natural landscapes, she has encountered raw, undeveloped areas that feel untouched by humanity—spaces meant to be visited rather than lingered in. Consistently, her work features contrasting layers of paint and vibrant colors alongside strong geometric shapes. The emotions she captures manifest as vast, timeless forms that remain unaffected by personal lives. These forms are not uncaring or malicious forces; rather, they exist inevitably and without bias. Viewers are invited to share this space without direct engagement, experiencing a glimpse of the natural essence distilled onto the canvas, reminiscent of the vibrant Knoxville art scene and the creative atmosphere found in Knoxville studios.

John Allen is an artist whose work has been exhibited regionally and internationally, including at the Corcoran Gallery and Arrowmont Center for Arts and Craft. His work spans various media including drawing, sculpture, photography, and printmaking. John's work is often focused on process, especially aspects that are experimental, meditative or imaginative. Born in Upstate South Carolina near the Blue Ridge escarpment, John has always been in and around the outdoors, imparting a love of exploration as well as an interest in History, the natural environment and place. He attended Clemson University, obtaining a Bachelors of Fine Art in 2010 and completed a Masters of Fine Art degree from the University of South Florida in 2014. John has been an instructor at The University of South Florida, Maryville College and Pellissippi State Community College. You may also find him working on his collaborative community photography outreach project, The Big Camera!

Ame Houston is a self-taught painter and multi-media artist working primarily in acrylic, oil, and linocut printmaking. Raised in Metro Detroit and now based in East Tennessee, their work is rooted in the imagery of urban decay and changing landscapes.
Through imagery of deterioration, Houston explores the beauty in things deemed imperfect, or broken by societal standards. Their work reflects on how bodies and spaces continue to hold meaning, function, and presence even when they fall outside expectations of wholeness or permanence.
